High performance ductile Nb-Ti /Cu Superconducting strands are manufactured in long lengths for applications where large, uniform magnetic fields are required (e.g., MRI, NMR, accelerator magnets). This paper illustrates how these wires are manufactured so that their microstructure is on the same scale as the superconducting vortex lattice. It reviews the historical development of these wires and looks at the most recent advances in superconducting wire manufacture. Some contrasts are drawn with the processing of HTS strands.
