Halogen-free systems have become an acceptable part of the cable makers’ method of manufacture. Unfortunately, although extremely environmentally friendly, they have their limitations in areas of processability combined with maintaining high levels of fire retardance. This has restricted their use in the manufacture of unscreened twisted pair (UTP) data cables and fire-resistant energy cables. Compound S540 has overcome these limitations and is successfully being used as a halogen-free fire retardant, low-smoke sheathing material for both data and energy cable applications at maximum levels of fire retardance.
