Description

By E. Aernoudt, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium
1988

Material problems in wire, rod and tube drawing can seldom be solved by materials science alone. It is true that the physical metallurgist, based on sophisticated investigation techniques, can describe the development of the different structural characteristics during the drawing process. But he can neither quantitatively explain heterogeneities in structure and texture over the cross-section of the drawn products, nor can he account for the development of the residual stress state or structural damage, without asking help from a rigourous analysis of the drawing process, based on plasticity mechanics.
