Boron is added to low carbon wire rod steel as a means of reducing tensile strength and increasing ductility. Experience shows that other properties are also modified. The selection of boron alloyed steel should be guided by knowledge of the total effect that could influence properties and/or processing to the final product. This paper compares some of the characteristics of boron versus non-boron low carbon steel and discusses their application in order to provide a basis for more informed decisions regarding their use.
