Description

By Mark P. Hayes, Institute of Spring Technology, England
2001

In the spring industry it has been the norm for many years to regard music wire, chrome silicon and 302 stainless steel as the highest strength materials available for commercial spring production. Higher strength versions of these materials have been evaluated as spring materials. This paper will explore these three common wire materials, at the limits of tensile strength commercially available, to quantify the benefits gained in terms of spring performance, having first established that spring makers can form them without problems of cracking.
