Decisions are made every day in the wire and cable industry based upon data that has either been inflated or deflated by the amount of measurement error. Excessive measurement variation can cause good product to be rejected and bad product to be accepted. This paper discusses how to identify the degree of measurement error and how to extract that error from a series of observations so that we may determine the true amount of product variation. The author also discusses how to compensate for the amount of measurement error for a single observation in order to make a better-informed decision regarding the acceptability of the product.
