The electromagnetic stirring system, located inside the casting zone in the Hazelett caster, uses electromagnetic forces to improve copper rod quality. After two years, its performance shows a reduction in porosity and improvement in grain refinement. This paper describes the installation by Phelps Dodge in cooperation with Hazelett at the Norwich, Conn., USA, plant.
