Machining is inevitable in most cases for obtaining complicated shapes, even though advanced forming technology has been developed. Graphite particles are known to improve machinability of steels that demand high strength and high toughness as structural materials. This paper investigates the formation of graphite particles that could be accelerated by adding boron and silicon in medium-carbon steels using thermodynamic and kinetic calculations as well as dilatometric analyses.
