Basic tribological principles which govern lubricant behavior will be explored. The conditions experienced by the lubricant during the drawing operation cause changes in the lubricant’s physical state, which in turn affects its performance in the die. The means of studying these effects is thermal analysis. Thermal analysis techniques will be examined for use in lubricant design and selection. A case study in which thermal analysis provided information leading to improved wiredrawing performance will be presented.
