This paper presents preliminary efforts to design a two-part pressure die to draw high-carbon steel wire from 0.140 in. ? to 0.038 in. ?. The results were compared with those obtained using normal dies. Evaluation of die performance was done by measuring the amount of residual phosphate coating and lubricant after drawing and the kilograms of drawn wire produced until failure of the last die in the series. Pressure dies allowed drawing speeds of 18 m/s, improving on the maximum speed of 14 m/s which is possible with normal dies.
