Questioning conventional wisdom is the theme of this lecture, which chronicles more than 30 years of personal involvement in the manufacture of ferrous rod and wire. The lecture recalls significant changes in the industry, many of which—though they did not seem metallurgically significant at the time—have proven to be “cornerstones for today’s high quality ferrous wire products.” It focuses on the efforts behind these changing processes, particularly as they were implemented at the Kansas City Works of Armco Steel Corp.
The lecture warns that many ideas generally accepted over the years have often been found later to be wrong or at least misinterpreted. It advises readers never to give up questioning these ideas when they believe they are right.
“Conventional wisdom is nothing more than a model describing a process that allows one to predict the effects of change. When the model no longer is effective at predicting the effects of change, a new model is required. Those who question current thinking, and attempt to improve on it, provide the progress for the future.”
