A test method based on Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM) is used to determine fracture toughness for three high-strength grades of 1.83 mm diameter high-carbon steel wires. The most applicable stress intensity factor solutions (K-solutions) for semi-elliptical surface cracks in circular rods are used. A three-dimensional FEA model is also developed to determine KI for straight-edge cracks.
