In order to have accurate numerical simulations of the cold heading process, it is imperative to define a fracture criterion that is appropriate for the conditions actually encountered during cold heading. The Dynamic Drop Weight Test (DDWT) machine uses a falling weight to apply a compressive load to a workpiece. It is capable of generating strain rates comparable to those of cold heading, which cannot be attained by servo-hydraulic machines.
