Fine wire defects in saw wire and steel tire cord are generated during two operations: rod manufacture and product conversion. The lowest-risk wire rod is produced by Japanese steelmakers. The highest-risk conversion operations are heat treating and spooling of fine wire on the shipping spool for saw wire and the in-process spool for tire cord. This paper discusses these processing areas and some precautions that can be taken to ameliorate risk.
