Through thermomechanical processing in a reducing sizing mill, the properties and microstructure of spring steel can be tailored to make the rolled rod more suitable for downstream processing. The combination of relatively low rolling temperatures to promote a uniform fine grain-size, excellent dimensional tolerance, and controlled cooling from the finishing pass, makes it possible to produce rod with reduced tensile strength.
