In the course of processing high-carbon steel, an intermediate patenting treatment is necessary to meet requirements for mechanical properties, but it is expensive and time consuming. It is possible to remove the intermediate patenting treatment by using a medium carbon grade with micro-alloying elements which permit improved ductility. This paper deals with the methodology used to develop such steel grades: metallurgical study, phase transformation, simulation laboratory trials, and processing trials.
