This study establishes guidelines for the design of the superconductor and of the pass-reduction practices that will lead to the fabrication of high quality, defect-free superconducting wire in a reproducible cost-effective manner. The work presents an analytical model, based on an upper bound treatment that provides criteria for the prevention of failure. The experimental data present modes of failures, which generally start with the breaking of individual filaments and propagate across the neighboring filaments.
